School Sports Premium Funding

What is School Sports Premium Funding?

The government is committing funding to schools to improve the provision of Physical Education. This funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on Sport and PE provision.

School Sports Premium Funding at Patcham Infant School

As a school we have some degree of freedom to choose how we spend the money to improve our PE provision across the school. There are guidelines from Ofsted and the Government as to how to use the funding. We have worked with Darren Hambrook, a specialist PE teacher to work alongside Claire Studd (PE Leader) and all the members of staff.

Darren is an Advanced Skills Teacher of PE and he has over 16 years of experience working in over half of the schools in Brighton and Hove. He has worked in Secondary, Primary and SEN schools. Darren is the curriculum lead for Primary PE in Brighton and Hove and delivers INSET training at Westdene Teaching Alliance on behalf of Brighton and Hove. He is also an accredited trainer for the Youth Sport Trust delivering training in Primary Schools. Darren is well known to the school having previously worked with us and in the Patcham community. Darren will be working and teaching alongside teachers modelling and demonstrating outstanding practice. We feel this will have the greatest impact to improve the quality of our PE teaching. It will not only benefit the children who are currently in our school but it will also enhance children’s PE experiences in the future. The staff will also benefit from working with an expert within the field of PE which will ultimately benefit future generations of children joining the school. This is a fantastic opportunity for staff CPD and to enhance the quality of PE for all our children.

Work so far at the school

Darren has now been working with us every Thursday morning since September 2013 and together with Claire they have been closely monitoring PE provision. They have made an excellent start on adapting our Schemes of Work and Skills Booklet that will ultimately help all teachers to plan effective lessons throughout the school. During the the year 2021-22 Claire will be teaching alongside teachers, modelling outstanding PE, discussing with teachers how to plan next steps, how to effectively use resources and how to develop children’s skills in PE. This is an amazing opportunity for Patcham Infant School.

Future Plans

Claire will be meeting regularly with teachers to provide continued high quality PE and School Sport opportunities to ensure that our improvements are sustainable. Please look at our action plan to find out more details and look out for photographs here on the website showing some of your children working hard and developing their PE skills.
